Eleven Things

It’s incredible how one minute you’re thinking this meme thing is about played out and the next you’re excitedly copy-pasting because you got tagged. (!!) It’s like I’m in middle school again and got picked for dodgeball. Someone wants me on their team!

(She’s taking it all back right now.)

Here we go:

1. What is your favorite type of cheese?
I feel like this is a somewhat lame answer, but good old cheddar. As sharp as possible, though. I’m always bringing home super-sharp cheddar and Thomas is always wondering why I insist on the stuff that isn’t as kid friendly. (They eat it just fine.)

2. What are you excited about?
Having a newborn around again. I’m enjoying the heck out of it. I get depressed sometimes because I’m a total baby person – I love having tinies around to nurse and snuggle and even get up with in the night – but my kids insist on growing up. I love them just as much, of course, but, man, babyhood is the best. (I do not like getting up in the night with two-year-olds. Ahem.)

(It’s kind of sad, but getting up with a small baby in the night is like bonus me-time. I get to read! Or watch TV! Or listen to a podcast! Plus there’s a BABY to cuddle, which makes any situation better. And no one can blame me for being sleep deprived, like they might if I chose to stay up too late.) (To be fair, it’s usually just me blaming myself in that situation, but that counts.)

3. How did you celebrate your last birthday?
That was a long time ago. I was 7 weeks pregnant and in the depths of morning-sickness misery. My sister couldn’t think of anything treat or pampering wise to get me other than a big bag of various crackers, ginger chews, and the like. It was very much appreciated. I may have been more than a bit hormonal, too, because I almost burst into tears at the thoughtfulness.

I think Thomas took me to my favorite hibachi place, which I did manage to rally for. I was sad when those leftovers were gone, because I could only muster up the energy to eat for REALLY good stuff and this fit the bill. He also got me about the best present ever – all 20 seasons of Law & Order on DVD. For years my go-to answer to “do you miss having cable?” had been “do you realize you can’t find Law & Order reruns anywhere online??”

4. What is on your bedside table?
A lamp from college. A fan because I’m always hot. A water bottle. Most of the good stuff (books, iPad, etc) is in the living room next to the spot where I nurse the baby most often.

5. What do you order from the movie theater concession stand?
I’m a cheapskate, so usually nothing. I smuggle dark chocolate and a water bottle in my purse and feel vaguely guilty about it. The movie theater at the nice mall serves Starbucks, though, so I’ll often get a venti macchiato – there’s no ‘movie theater markup’ and, in fact, it’s cheaper than at an actual Starbucks. Somehow I feel better about paying $4.00 for a drink if it’s not something I could get for 79 cents at Quik Trip. Not that I remember the last time I stopped at QT for a fountain soda, but it’s the principle of the thing.

6. Do you have a garden? What’s growing?
Haaaa. No. I try to go outside as little as possible during the summer. Thomas has tried to grow vegetables in our backyard several times and its just too shaded/dark back there, so I don’t even have to feel guilty about my dislike of gardening.

7. Any summer plans?
I get to go to D.C. with just Thomas and Eleanor! My sister-in-law and her family live in Virginia, so we’ll visit them a bit, then spend some time sightseeing. The baby and I fly home after four days and Thomas stays for a business trip.

(When did going on a plane trip with ‘just the 2-month-old’ become luxury? Because it so is.)

Beyond that, I’ll be running Margaret to activities all over the place. She’s attending three week-long Bible schools again (like last summer), going to two weeks of swimming lessons, and also something called safety camp run by the school system with the police department/fire department, etc. Paul is still a little too young for all of this, so he gets to hang out with mom and Eleanor.

8. Which TV couple(s) are you rooting for?
The only thing I’m currently watching is How I Met Your Mother. I started marathoning it the night the series finale aired – I didn’t watch it, obviously, but so many people were into it I decided I should check out the show. I’m almost finished with season five and I think I’m rooting for Robin & Barney. I go back and forth on them.

9. What’s the last thing you bought?
We got a Sam’s club membership last week – on Zulily, because I can’t resist a deal – so the last things I bought were all in bulk. A 12-pack of Chobani. Three pounds of grapes. Two pounds of sliced cheese. (Unfortunately not cheddar.)

10. What’s one thing you are passionate about?
Right now it’s all things baby. Breastfeeding. Babywearing. And sleep.

11. What are you grateful for this week?
Thomas has been amazing in this new baby time. He’s on two-kid duty pretty much all the time when he’s home while I sit on the couch nursing the baby. I like to think the fact he gets to sleep through the night evens it out a little, but he’s still incredible.

I’m going to try to tag 11 people who haven’t done this yet, but I’m not double checking so I might not be perfect: A’Dell, Ashley, Doing My BestJen, Jen, Lacey, Laura, Glam-O-Mommy, MirielRA, Wendy

  1. Yay! You picked me for the team! :) I’d been wanting to do this one! Thanks!

I have a Spurs game tonight, but I will definitely try to do this over the weekend. Glad to hear you, baby Eleanor, and the family are doing well! XO

  2. I love that our openings are so similar. I swear I hadn’t read yours first :)

I love tiny babies, too. I don’t want more babies, but I do wish I could rewind my own children to their newborn stages. And then fast-forward straight through age three. That’s how time works, right?

  3. OMG I got picked! I feel so special! I cheated and scrolled down to see who you picked before I even read the blog and felt so darn special to see my name (and then I verified that I was actually the right Lacey – see I’m totally used to not getting picked!). Okay – off to read and then do my own 11 things. 😛
