Today is my 30th birthday. It’s also nearly the 10th anniversary of the day I met some guy my roommate wanted me to date named Thomas. When you meet someone, there’s so much of your life they don’t know about. You can tell them, of course. But I’ll never have to tell him about my 20’s…because he was there. We’ve been through 8 am classes, ballroom dance competitions, college graduations, a wedding, an apartment, a house, two jobs, and three kids. Nearly all the big changes in my life, really. When I look back, a line from Shall We Dance, about marriage, keeps popping into my head: “Your life will not go unnoticed, because I will notice it. Your life will not go unwitnessed, because I will be your witness.”
All the big memories of my 20’s involve him. I hope my 30’s, 40’s, and beyond are the same.
(And because my birthday isn’t entirely about my husband, I’ll totally post a picture later of present-day Jessica standing by the life-sized framed photo of baby Jessica. As you do.)
